For whom?

For visual artists who have been working professionally for at least 1 and no more than 4 years.

For what?

You can use this grant to develop your art practice during 1 year. It can include making new work, research, experimentation, the purchase of materials and equipment, and so on. Or it could be used for working on a commission or participating in exhibitions or events at home or abroad.

How much?

€ 22,000 for 12 months.

How and when to apply?

Applications can be submitted at any time of the year, using the Mondriaan Fund’s online application system. You must first apply for an account in order to submit your application. Once your application is complete, please allow for a processing period of 3 months from the moment your application has been submitted in full. Grants cannot be awarded retroactively. However, due to the many applications to the fund, the processing time can take longer than expected.

Good to know

  • Have you been professionally active as an artist for more than 4 years? Then Artist Basic is the scheme you should apply for. 
  • If you are unsure whether you are eligible for an Artist Starter grant, please contact a Mondriaan Fund staff member. 
  • An Artist Starter award comprises more than just financial support. You can also join a mentoring programme and will be invited to participate in Prospects, a Mondriaan Fund exhibition during Art Rotterdam. 
  • No budget needs to be included in your application. You can spend the grant to develop your practice as you see fit.
