For what?
You can submit an application for the creation of a literary work in any form except a book (or journal publication). In addition, you can spend part of the amount on your professional development. This can include mentoring, coaching or training. Travel and accommodation expenses incurred as part of the project can also be covered by the grant.
How much?
€5,000 or €10,000
How and when to apply?
Apply at any time of year through the online application form on the Dutch Foundation for Literature website.
Here you will find more information about submitting an application to the Dutch Foundation for Literature.
Good to know
If your new work consists of a reading on stage, you are expected, as the writer, to give the reading yourself. Do you not intend to do this? Then please take a look at the Theatre Text Grant scheme. You do not necessarily have to perform other types of work – such as podcasts or audiovisual projects – yourself.
To apply, you must be able to show at least one (literary) project or work. You must also demonstrate that you received a fee for it. Your previous work may be a book or publication in a literary journal. The piece you send along with your application will be assessed to get an idea of the literary quality of your work. This is done by external advisors who are experts in the field in question.
There are a few more conditions for the work you can submit. If it is a journal publication, it must be a publication in a literary journal subsidised by the Dutch Foundation for Literature. If you submit a book, it must have been published with a standard contract with a regular literary publisher. If your submission is your participation in the programme of a literary festival or organisation (such as a stage performance, podcast or digital production), it must be an organisation that has received a grant from the Dutch Foundation for Literature.
You can apply to this scheme if you are already professionally active as a creator in the literary field and if you have a presentation partner (for example, a literary festival or a broadcaster; see below) willing to present your new work and bring it to the attention of the public, who will pay you a fee for this, and who will support and guide you in the creation of your new work.
There is an income limit of €45,000 taxable aggregate income, inclusive of any grants received. If your 2024 earnings will exceed this limit, there is no point in applying.
Previous applications
If your application is rejected for formal reasons, you may submit an improved application later. If your application is rejected, you cannot reapply until you have new work for review.
If your application has been approved, you cannot submit a new application until the final result in accordance with the plan has been shared with an audience and any approved development process has been completed. Please send the final result of your first application with your new application (for our advisors to review).
